International Women's Day 2018

Today is International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Collectively everyone can make a difference within their sphere of influence by taking concrete action to help drive gender parity.

The campaign theme being launched today is #PressforProgress.

Everyone, regardless of gender, should always maintain a gender parity mindset. We should continuously develop and extend our mindset to proactively seek out and forge women's equality while supporting others to explore their own views and beliefs about equality. We should as a minimum challenge statements that limit women use inclusive language and call out stereotypes.

But this is nothing new, 2018 also commemorates the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave some women the right to vote. Emmeline Pankhurst led that early struggle for equality, she had the benefit of education and she attended a finishing school in Paris which was under the direction of a woman who believed that girls’ education should be as thorough as the education of boys. Emmeline was taught chemistry and other sciences as well as practical bookkeeping. Not too different from our focus on STEM today.

It wasn’t until 1928 that parliament passed the Representation of the People (equal franchise) act 1928, which gave women equal votes with men. Let’s not wait another 10 years for gender equality let’s continue to #PressforProgress and make it a reality.
